A
Message from the Executive Director,
Our Past
In 1986, a group of Latinos with HIV/AIDS, Social Workers and Community
Leaders mobilized and started organizing a series of support groups for
individuals recently diagnosed with HIV. As the epidemic grew and
more Latinos in the Hartford area became infected with the virus that
causes AIDS, these individuals took a leadership role and started advocating
for more culturally appropriate programs and interventions to halt the
spread of the disease. Out of these issues emerged Latino Community Services,
formerly known as Latinos Contra SIDA, Inc.
Our Future
Today, as the HIV epidemic continues to grow among the Latino population,
we have developed new strategies that will enable us to reach those disproportionately
impacted more efficiently and effectively, reaffirming our commitment
to strengthening Latino families and communities. We will continue to
implement our strategic plan, LCS 2010, and its enhanced new vision, focusing
on three main areas: the integration of prevention and care in an effort
to provide a continuum of services to those we serve and the community,
the use of evidence-based interventions to deliver effective prevention
programs, and the expansion of services to provide capacity building assistance
to faith-and community organizations serving Latinos and other disproportionately
impacted populations.
We encourage everyone to get educated, learn the facts and avoid the
impact of HIV/AIDS in your life and in the lives of your loved ones. Please
